Gel stain colors

A gel stain is heavier than a regular oil stain and sits mostly on the surface. That is why it is the standard fix for blotching on pine and maple, and why it gives the most even color across a set of cabinet doors.

The cost is some grain contrast. If you want oak's open grain to pop, an oil stain does that better; if you want even color, use a gel.
